What should a church post on social media?

By November 10, 2020Tips

Our team at Sunday Social creates over 90 social media posts per month. We add these to our over 5,000 graphics available for churches to post on their own social media streams. (You can get immediate access for $9/month.)

It’s hard to come up with that much content. And we don’t just open a Bible and tap a page to find out what content to create. There’s a ton of strategy involved in helping churches post on social media.

We start with seven different categories of content. We spread these out evenly throughout the social media calendar. Here are the seven types of content and some examples of each.

Social Media Content Churches Should Post

1. Belonging

People in your church and community are dealing with feelings of shame and isolation. Use your social media channels to reinforce the idea that they have a family in the Body of Christ. Scriptures, quotes, and event simple sayings can reinforce that your followers belong in the Body of Christ and belong at your church.

2. Identity

Who does God say we are? The world is always telling us our value or who we are, but one of the best uses of social media for churches is to say what God says. Use Scriptures, song lyrics, quotes, and more to remind your followers who they are in Jesus.

3. Solutions

One of the best ways to get your content shared and bookmarked is to make it practical and helpful. Consider addressing some of the following topics:

  • Overcoming fear/anxiety
  • How to have influence/make an impact
  • How to forgive
  • Overcoming doubt
  • Dealing with sadness
  • How to read the Bible/pray
  • Simple ways to give
  • Relationships/money/work/diet and exercise

Give simple tips from a biblical perspective. Discipleship isn’t easy, but having a friend to come alongside you makes it much more possible. Why not use your church’s social media accounts to do that?

4. Invitation

Invite people to your church! But do it in a subtle way. One thing we always say at Sunday Social is to focus on fomo (fear of missing out) over promo. So don’t tell people why they need to show up. Show them what happened. Post pictures of your church service along with a caption like “we love to meet together”. If you show the life that happens at your church, it counts as an invitation without having to say “come to church this Sunday” 52 times per year.

5. Interaction

Give your people an opportunity to share their opinion, ask for prayer, or engage with your church. Don’t just take a cheap shot and go for the comments/likes…ask a question that reinforces the mission of your church. Anyone can start a fight by asking “Apple or PC?” It takes finesse to get interaction on your social media that actually reinforces what you’re trying to accomplish as a church.

6. Humor

There’s nothing wrong with having fun. And places like Instagram and Facebook are largely entertainment mediums. So post something that makes your followers laugh while still reinforcing the mission of the church. Below are some great examples.

7. Attention-Getting

Finally, most social media platforms were built to be visual. Instagram, especially, is still a beauty-based medium. Post a graphic that’s beautiful, unexpected, or with a lot of white space. Resist the urge to make every graphic giant text screaming the message. It’s okay to let beauty shine through in some posts.
